i can totally understand how people would want a truly unique character. Just being an elf or draenei or a walking football isn't unique enough for you so you clamber to think of something someone else hasn't done before... Or hasn't done often.
You want to be extra special. i get it. It's understandable. You want to be that beautiful, unique snowflake.
However, many players i have found over the years, go overboard. Even though, this is a fictional world and such- they somehow manage to fly over and above the laws and rules this world has.
i'm talking like... Those half vampire, half kitty, half demi-god characters for example. i can't take people who come up with that kinda stuff seriously. i'm sorry. You wanna play that - you won't be playing it in my guild. But the good news is - there are other guilds who claim to be heavy RP that would allow such things. Good find them And have fun
Now, if you're still reading, and still wondering HOW you can make a really special, and unique character without going insanely overboard, please read on.
Allow me to introduce you, to the idea of character flaws. Again, taking the idea from White Wolf Gaming, players can choose flaws to help distinguish their characters better. Choosing flaws gives you that added- and unique- spice to your role-play! And i can almost promise you, not everyone does it. People are quite concerned it seems, with playing 'perfect' people.
So, if you really want that very special character... consider incorperating some flaws into their personality and who they are. i CAN promise you'll have some good fun with it. And many a hour of role playing fun.
Again, these are all White Wolf ideas, i edited them a bit to make it more universal, if i missed anything well, you get the idea anyway i hope
Please enjoy.
Addiction
Your character is heavily addicted to something. Be it grog, their pipe, whatever, they can't stop. It practically consumes them.
Allergic
You are allergic to some substance. You may get hives or sneeze... your tongue might blow up and prevent you from talking..rash.. etc You might carry a needle or salve around with you for bug stings, or whatever else. Your character might even have a metal alergy...(great rp)
Amnesia
You are unable to remember anything about your past, yourself or your family. Your life is a blank slate. However, your past may someday come back to haunt you. Over the course of the story, you and your character will slowly discover them.
Anosmia
You have no sense of smell or taste.
Bad Sight
Your sight is defective. This Flaw could be, nearsightedness or farsightedness; or even a minor form of blindness, but whatever it is, is not correctable.
Beacon of the Unholy
You radiate palpable evil. Clergy and devout mortals know instinctively that there is something horribly wrong with you, and react accordingly. Churches and other places of worship are barred to you as well.
Blind
You cannot see-the world of color and light is lost to you. Many hunter characters take this and use their pet as their seeing eye-- whatever it is. Some people give their characters the ability to see in spectrums much like (nerd alert) jordie laforge on Star Trek with his visor.
Blood Hunted
You have been made the target of a blood hunt, and for you to return to your home city is death. Could be a large history behind this...and role playing out the issues of not being able to go into the particular city or town could be extra fun
Bad Teeth
You have bad teeth. They were never properly looked after and it causes you much pain to chew anything. You spend much time stirring- grinding or otherwise pureeing your food so you can drink it.
Phobia
Be it of small spaces, the dark, water, spiders.. you have a phobia. (the degree of it is up to you of course )
Simple
Your very simple minded to the point where you have a mental illness. You're not quite quick on the draw, and or perhaps you just never matured past 10 mentally.
Cold Breeze(For frost mages)
A chill wind follows you everywhere you go. While it may make for dramatic entrances, this effect also discomforts people and causes you to be sitting alone a lot..When you touch things it's also possible your character causes them to frost over.
Color Blindness
You can only see in black and white. Color means nothing to you, though you are sensitive to color density, which you perceive as shades of gray.
Compulsion
You have a psychological compulsion of some sort which can cause you a number of different problems. You compulsion may be for cleanliness, perfection, bragging stealing, gaming, exaggeration or just talking.
Confused
You are often confused, and the world seems to be a very distorted and twisted place. Sometimes you are simply unable to make sense of things. You need to roleplay this behavior all the time to a small degree, but your confusion becomes especially strong whenever stimuli surround you (such as when a number of different people talk all at once, or you enter a nightclub with loud pounding music).
Contagious
You have some sort of disease that was never able to be cured. This could effect your characters love life or just life in general to whatever degree you prefer.
Cursed
You have been cursed by someone or something with supernatural or magical powers. This curse is specific and detailed, it cannot be dispelled without extreme effort, and it can be life-threatening. Some examples follow:
If you pass on a secret that was told to you, your betrayal will later harm you in some way.
You stutter uncontrollably when you try to describe what you have seen or heard.
Tools often break or malfunction when you attempt to use them.
You are doomed to make enemies of those to whom you become most attached (so whatever you do, don't get too close to the other characters! ).
Every one of your accomplishments or achievements will eventually, inevitably, become soiled and fail in some way.
Deaf
You cannot hear sound. Someone playing this would have to be very touch sensitive and use vibrations in their feet etc.
Deathsight
Everything appears rotted and decayed to you- for whatever reason- your character was probally cursed by a vengeful Undead. (Great history possibilities here!!)The world appears to you as a corpse; mortals look diseased or skeletal, buildings seem decrepit, and your fellow people seem to be walking, moldering cadavers. Social interactions are difficult for you.
Deep Sleeper
When you sleep, it is very difficult for you to awaken. And roleplay how you never seem to be on time when you have an appointment early in the evening.
Deformity
You have some kind of deformity - a misshapen limb, a hunchback or whatever - which affects your interactions with others and may inconvenience you physically.
Disfigured
A hideous disfigurement makes you ugly and easy to notice as well as remember.
Disgrace to the Family
Your family for whatever reason- have decided you are a titanic mistake and failure, and has let everyone know it. You are mocked, taunted by your peers actively despised in general. (however in the Cats, one with this flaw would actually find one place they are not a disgrace tho their mentality of them 'thinking' they are could play into many things)
Driving Goal
You have a personal goal, which sometimes compel and directs you in startling ways. The goal is always limitless in depth, and you can never truly achieve it. It could be to eradicate the Horde or achieve the seat of power Kael'thas holds.. Because you must work toward your goal, it will get you into trouble and may jeopardize other actions. Choose your driving goal carefully, as it will direct and focus everything your character does.
Enemy
You have an enemy, or perhaps a group of enemies, who seek to harm you. You must decide who your enemy is and how you became enemies in the first place. (Could be a fun thing if you knew anyone who played a Horde character)
Flashbacks
Something traumatic happened in your characters life which causes flashbacks under the right stimuli. This could prevent them from fighting when they should be- getting on the boat, griffon etc.
Superstitious
Over what is up to you and to what degree, but your character could be wary over something....MUST throw spilled salt over their shoulder... steers clear of black cats.. freaks out over broken mirrors etc.
Bad Skin
Your character has a bad skin condition. Be it high school acne or a peeling thing or whatever.
Fragile Bones
Your character has a bone disease which makes them more suseptible to being hurt. They tend to run away more from enemies and stay way, way back.
Guilt-wracked
Your character has done something at some point which changed them. The guilt they feel makes them keep it inside like a dark secret and generally makes them miserable. They may try to secretly make ammends off and on.
Hard of hearing
Just like it says, your character isn't deaf, just needs things to be repeated a lot.
Hatred
You have an unreasoning hatred of a certain thing. This hate is total and largely uncontrollable. You may hate species of animal, a class of person, a color, a situation- anything. You constantly pursue opportunities to harm the hated object or to gain Dower over it.
Haunted
You are haunted by a ghost that only you (and Mediums) can see and hear. It actively dislikes you and enjoys making your life miserable by insulting, berating and distracting you - especially when you need to keep your cool (or should be fighting in battle) It also has a number of minor powers it can use against you ...hide small objects; bring a "chill" over others, making them very ill at ease with you; cause a loud buzzing in your ear or the ears of others; move a small object such as a knife or pen; break a fragile item such as a bottle or mirror; trip you; or make eerie noises such as chains rattling. Yelling at the ghost can sometimes drive it away, but it will confuse those who are around you.
Hunted Like a Dog
Another guild--or person, has decided that you're a target for extermination, and pursues you relentlessly. (This would require someone else to help keep this flaw alive and happening regularily)On the bright side, the enemies of your enemy may wish to help you out, potentially garnering you allies in the one instance.
Illiterate
Through lack of education or as the result of a condition like dyslexia, you are unable to read or write. Of course your character would need people to read them quests, or take notes for you.
Impatient
You have no patience for standing around and waiting. You want to do things now and devil take the hindmost. Everytime you are forced to wait around, you may go haring off on your own instead. Could be interesting in dungeon attacks... hehe
Incoherent
You are incapable of human speech. Maybe your jaw has collapsed or your tongue was sliced out for whatever reason. Pointing, grunting, wheezing and wildly gesturing are all within your repertoire, but actually forming words is not. Sometimes it seems animals understand you better.
Intolerance:
You have an unreasoning dislike of a certain thing. This may be an animal, a class of person, a color, a situation, or just about anything at all. Note that some dislikes may be too trivial to be reflected here-a dislike of cheese or tissue paper, for instance, will have little effect on play in most cases- lesser version of Hatred.
Lame
Your legs are injured or otherwise prevented from working effectively. A character may have to use a cane a lot, may be slower then others when running- or maybe can't run at ALL... (Again big fun in instances!)
Lazy
Self explainitory.
Lord of the Flies
Pig-pen from Charlie Brown anyone? For whatever reason...Buzzing harbingers of decay swirl around you everywhere. Their constant presence makes it difficult for you to interact socially and nearly impossible to sneak up on someone or hide effectively. The buzzing of the flies inevitably gives you away.
Low Self-lmage
You lack self-confidence and don't believe in yourself.
Magic Addict
If there is a new spell to potentially be learned you are totally there. You chew on blood thistle regularily and are always looking for the next best way to enhance your abilities.(magical abilities)
Magic Susceptibility
You are susceptible to magic... Whenever people are within a certain distance of you you become ill. Seems whatever it is the caster is doing to concentrate on using their magical abilities interferes with you somehow. You try to give casters a wide birth.
Mute
Your vocal apparatus does not function, and you cannot speak at all. You can communicate through other means -typically writing or signing. (this is the more severe version of not being able to talk- here you can't make any verbal sounds at all)
Necrophile
No, you don't have sex with the dead, (or maybe you do?) but you certainly enjoy their company. You are obsessed with dead bodies and "invite" them over to your domain. Your haven is tastefully decorated with severed and mutilated body parts of all kinds. You talk to your dead friends, dance with them, make art out of them and entertain frequently.
Nightmares
You experience horrendous nightmares (daymares?) every time you sleep, and memories of them haunt you during your waking hours. Some of the nightmares may be so intense that you mistake them for reality.
Odd Eye:
One of your eyes looks strikingly different from your other. (How so depends on you) Needless to say, this inhuman feature is not going to help your reputation.
Old Flame:
Someone you once cared deeply for is now with the enemy (Possibly horde). He still attempts to play on your sympathies "for old times' sake" while working against you. You most likely will not act against him unless the situation becomes life-threatening.
One Arm
You have only one arm - choose which, or determine randomly at character creation. This happened either at birth or an accident. It is assumed that you are accustomed to using your remaining hand.
One Eye
You have one eye - choose which, or determine randomly during character creation. You have no peripheral vision on your blind side.
Overconfident:
You have an exaggerated and unshakable opinion of your own worth and capabilities-you never hesitate to trust your abilities, even in situations where you risk defeat. Because your abilities may not be enough, such overconfidence can be very dangerous. When you do fail, you quickly find someone or something else to blame. If you are convincing enough, you can infect others with your overconfidence. (*Coughs* Kat is like this.)
