Impervious to pain and fear... and other negative emotions that may cause them at one time or another to look 'weak', 'pathetic' or 'unman/womanly'.
No, they are not.
Let's face it, many of us have been role-playing at one time or another and ran across the character of iron body and or nerves. And no matter how you tried to give them good, valid IC reason for their char to feel anything toward your char then an arrogant, cocky assuredness they refused to back down. Got frustrated pretty quickly, didin'cha?
Let me use my character, Kat, as an example. Because i cannot for the life of me think of anyone who is more self-assured, cocky and fearless than her.
While she is all those things, i don't lose sight of the fact that she is 'only human' with fears and nervousness like everyone else.
When someone tries to intimidate her, i will role-play out her sizing them up, cautiously. i will emote this. Make it clear that tho my character is acting like she's queen sh*t, she's still unsure. With the model partner, they would be doing something similar.
Remember, we can't SEE what the character's face is doing, the finer movements of their body language... we have to type this out.
Be realistic. You can still have your character's cocky personality, yet keep it real. And be ready for when push comes to shove.
Usually someone has to break- and back down - if only slightly. But there is NO fun for anyone to be bunting heads for an hour of, "no i'm not scared of you" "YEAH! well, i'm not scared of you either!" "Yeah!? Well, i could crush you with my mind!" "Oh yeah? You couldn't even move that fast!"... >> ugh...
When my character is sizing someone up, i OOCly look at their level, the gear they are wearing etc. Realistically, level (and gear), to me, equivalents into how experienced someone is ICly. So, i use level to determine how experienced they LOOK... body tone... posture, the way they move, speak, etc. If someone is lower than Kat in level, then it's unlikely she is gonna be too worried - tho depending on level - she could be. Bottom line, the more lower they are than Kat, the less worried she is, because to her, they LOOK inexperienced in some way. And if someone is gonna talk the talk, they gotta be ready to walk the walk.
Give and take role-play guys. A lot of OOC whispers to help make sure you are both on the same page and there is no head bunting. It's OK to have your char be nervous or scared... it makes them more real.
